We have the kids paint bear shapes with watered down glue and then sprinkle coffee grounds on the bears. They smell great
and the kids love the texture!
Brown Bear
Read Brown Bear, Brown Bear 1st. Then, Finger paint with brown paint and coffee grounds mixed in.After it dries add collage
materials to make a face and decorate the bear. Add signs for each child Brown Bear Brown Bear what did you see? I see___ and
have the child dictate what he sees. Looks adorable on a bulletin board and it combines literature and art.
Bear Sponge Painting
Use a teddy bear shaped sponge and sponge on brown paint or glue. Sprinkle on brown colored sand. (Mix sand with powdered tempera).
Shake off excess. Beary cute!
Bear Feet
Paint the bottom of the child's foot. Have him/her step down on paper, while the paint is still wet let the child add the following
bear arms, bear ears and a circle for a bear face the children may draw the face, or you may want to have one ready for them.
Teddy Bear's Picnic
Have a teddy bear picnic where each child brings their own teddy bear from home (I bring a few extra in case some forget
and need to borrow). We make sandwiches and cut them into different shapes and eat them. We play bear music (Teddy Bear's Picnic,
Bear went over the mountain, etc.) The children love it!
Counting Bears
Everyone has plastic counting bears, they float in your water table! To add math, fine motor and science, I have large plastic
tweezers (the kind that come in the Bed Bugs Game) and cups. The children pick up the bears with the tweezers and put them in the
cups. The children are really strengthening their little hands for writing.
Bear Day
Have a day where the children bring in their own teddy bears. Weigh and measure them and make a graph showing the largest to the
smallest and heaviest to lightest. Make special awards for all of the bears ("Most Fluffy", "Cutest Nose", etc.) Make sure you
bring a few extra bears for those who may forget. The children have a great time!!
Bear Faces
Spread peanut butter (watch out for allergies) on a plain rice cake. Add two small pretzel twists for the ears and M&Ms
for the eyes, nose and mouth.
Gummi Bear Sorting
Laminate a sheet of paper with several bear shapes in different colors. Use these to sort gummy bears, then eat and enjoy.
Bear Claws
This takes 1&1/2 refrigerated biscuits for each child. pat the first biscuit out, take the 1/2 biscuit and divide
into three balls. add to first biscuit, to make the claws, sprinkle with cinnamon sugar and bake.
Going On A Bear Hunt
(Start tapping legs one at a time with the children) Chant We're going on a bear hunt (children repeat) We're going to catch a big one
(children repeat) I'm not scared (children repeat) Cause I've got my flashlight (pretend to hold up a flashlight into the air) (children repeat)
Do you see what I see? (shade your eyes with your hand) (children repeat) It's a tall tall tree (children repeat) Can't go over it (children repeat)
Can't under it (children repeat) Can't go through it (children repeat) We'll have to climb up it (children repeat) (pretend to climb up a tree and come back down)
Go through as many obstacles as you can. i.e. tall grass (rub hands together) river (pretend to put bathing suit on and swim) mud (walk slow) mountain You finally
come to the cave. Make it as scary as you like, whisper, walk slow, turn on your flashlight if your scared) Pretend to see the bear and scream and run (tap legs very quickly)
backward through the mud river and tall grass back to your home where you can lock the door! Really throw yourself into the fun and try to make it somewhat real.

Are You Sleeping
Sung to: "Frere Jacques"
Are you sleeping, are you sleeping Little bear, little bear?
You will sleep all winter, through the cold, cold winter,
Little bear, little bear.
Are you sleeping, are you sleeping, Little bear, little bear?
You will wake in springtime,
In the warm, warm springtime, Little bear, little bear
I Met A Bear

I better step aside.
